Company Expands Leadership Team With Infection Prevention and Control Expert Sue Barnes

Ms. Barnes is the company’s third Clinical Advisor and sixth advisor in total, joining business, advertising, engineering, legal, and healthcare experts Scott McNealy, Josh McQueen, Greg Lowry, John Goodrich, J. Tress Ritter, and Leopold Selker.
Ms. Barnes, RN, BSN, CIC, FAPIC brings more than three decades of nationally recognized clinical, nursing, and infection and prevention experience in the healthcare industry. Ms. Barnes dedicated 27 years to Infection Prevention and Control in Kaiser Permanente, an integrated healthcare system that spans seven regions from the east coast to Hawaii, 35 hospitals and more than 400 medical offices. For the last 10 years she served as Kaiser’s National Leader for infection prevention and control. She is Board certified in infection control and prevention and is a nationally recognized figure in the field of healthcare associated infections and infection prevention. She served on the National Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Board of Directors and was selected to represent APIC on the Technical Advisory Panel of the National Quality Forum on Healthcare Associated Infections and the National Quality Forum End Stage Renal Disease Steering Committee.
Ms. Barnes is now an independent clinical consultant dedicated to supporting the evolution of the profession and practice of Infection Prevention and Control, ultimately improving the safety of patients. She is also on the board of directors for San Francisco Bay Area APIC chapter, and for the California APIC Coordinating Council.
As an active author, Ms. Barnes created the HAI Prevention and Control Plus Measures toolkit, and has been published in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Journal, the American Journal of Infection Control, The Joint Commission Source for Compliance Strategies, and The Permanente Journal. She was an author for several APIC guides including the APIC Guide to Elimination of CRBSI, the APIC Guide to the Elimination of Infections in Hemodialysis, and participated in the development of the APIC Training Program for Infection Prevention in Ambulatory Care.
As a regular speaker at leading industry conferences, Ms. Barnes has educated attendees of annual AORN and APIC Conferences, the Decennial Conference, and numerous other local, national and online events. Ms. Barnes’ presentation topics have included Surgical Site Infection (SSI) prevention, Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) prevention, infection prevention mentoring, scope reprocessing, hand hygiene, Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) prevention, and simulation as a method of teaching infection prevention principles.
