UC Berkeley leads team of scientists to open advanced, ‘pop-up’ coronavirus testing lab
A team of scientists, clinicians and volunteers at UC Berkeley has scrounged together a battery of high-tech machinery from various locations and built a pop-up COVID-19 laboratory capable of diagnosing 1,000 swab tests a day, at least as fast as any in California.
The new laboratory, which is expected to be certified for use sometime next week, is expected to dramatically increase the amount of diagnostic testing in the Bay Area, which has been plagued by a shortage of test kits and an inability to determine how many people are stricken with the highly contagious virus.
